I just noticed our posts are showing our IP addresses and if you click on them you even get a whois
This is alarming and should be removed.

That is standard for forums and can't be changed. 8ch admin (who is a right-wing reactionary) can see your IP, too. If you've posted on RevLeft, they can see your IP. Any website you visit, they can see your IP. On here only the admins and moderators can see the IP in the forums they moderate. Maybe because I've been on forums since 2003-4, this isn't worrying for me.

If you want to hide your IP the best way is to use a proxy, a VPN, or better yet, Tor. I have tried posting from tor browser and it works fine. Tor is free and easy to use. This forum is fast, text-only so you won't have a worse experience browsing with Tor.

Your IP isn't associated with your name or address. Most people have dynamic IPs as well. If someone wanted to identify you via IP they would have to contact your ISP and have them tell you to whom they leased the IP at that time. You expose yourself much more by liking a left-wing meme on Facebook than posting here.

You're right though, maybe not everyone is aware of it. I will make it a forum-wide announcement and let people know that their IP is being logged and if they don't wish it to be, to use Tor. Would that be satisfactory?

I made an announcement for it. I hope it doesn't scare people away because this is standard for literally every single website on the internet. You cannot visit a place without your IP being seen, unless you use a proxy, Tor or VPN.

Write something like "Like all websites," before the IP address. Less likely to scare people off

On the upper right of your message box tho seems they were deleted in this thread
I have no problem with the back end seeing my IP but when it's shown publicly on all messages then it's bad.

It's not shown publicly. Only moderators can see them in the forums they moderate. That's why you can't see them in Meta.

Oh then false alarm from my part
Still seeing IP adresses even when you're a mod is too much, on 8ch mods can only see a hash.

But the admin, who has questionable political alliances, and anyone with access to the web server can see them as well.

If any moderators prove to be untrustworthy, I can remove their status. There isn't and shouldn't be anything incriminating on this website. Except the fact that you visit a website called 'leftist.site'. You can be sure that all 8ch IP addresses and logs were handed over to authorities after the NZ shooting.

This is a site run by a leftist for leftists. I really don't know what assurances I can give you beyond that. If you're connecting directly to the Internet you shouldn't have an expectation of privacy, Snowden revelations and the existence of the PRISM program has made that very clear.

I can assure you that if someone knows only your IP address they can't do much. Your name, address, or any kind of identifying information is not associated with your IP (except in the ISP records, which only your ISP and law enforcement can access). That's why, again, there is no illegal content on this forum.

Law enforcement has literally always monitored the shit out of 8chan, even before NZ. When you download Tor your IP becomes part of a database of Tor users. The panopticon sees all.
