Quite recently, the bramble clay melomys, a species of rodent found only in a small island on the Australian great barrier reef (Which is at risk from climate change itself), has gone extinct due to rising water levels caused by climate change. While the animal itself was not of any importance to anywhere outside of its tiny island (and the species itself is not that unique, with an extremely genetically close relative still around), this could mark the beginning of something much worse.
