I don't want to run a leftist site or a community, I want to be a part of a leftist community that has a say in how its run. The fact that I am the one with access to the server and have privileges that come with that is only by virtue of circumstance. I'm happy to trust others and share access. There is an action log that only an admin can see that logs every single action taken on the forum (user creation, user deletion, moving of topics, etc). There is no way to edit the log, one can only delete the whole thing (in which case that gets logged as well). I'm going to figure out a way to have this log publicly displayed and saved.

This forum is just a starting point. Doesn't even have to be this particular forum software. After a long search, weighing of options and features I found this one to have most of the things I'd like a forum to have. I'm also happy to create other sites, IRC server, mastodon instance, diaspora, teamspeak, whatever.

The name is also a starting point, leftist.site was just a TLD that was available. It's not very imaginative and if someone can come up with something better the name can be changed.

Please use this forum for discussion pertaining to this site/server.

since you said in the /leftypol/ thread that you had a VPS, I would recommend using it to host an IRC server + web client on your domain so anyone can discuss these things live without installing extra software.

Good idea. I looked into KiwiIRC and you can just use it from their website. Another way is to include it as a widget (that loads JS from their website), or install an instance on KiwiIRC here (which requires nodejs). If someone wants it, I can do it, but for now I think there are enough online clients available, like KiwiIRC and mibbit. And there wouldn't be much of a difference between running it here or there. Also, if there is a channel on the server that requires SSL, I don't think web IRC clients are able to connect to those (I may be wrong about this).

I looked at the /leftypol/ thread and thought this looked cool. Reminds me a bit of the old spore forum that I used to post on before it was shut down.

How are you funding this site? Are you going to set up a patreon account in the future?

You should make the log public, that will calm the paranoid ones.

How are you funding this site?
From wages earned selling my labour power.

Karl
Are you going to set up a patreon account in the future?
Probably not. I'm not in this to make money. Currently, I can afford it. If more money is necessary in the future we can cross that bridge when we get to it.

I'm trying to find a way because right now how it's configured is that only admins of the forum can 'fetch' the database, and it's retrieved when an admin clicks 'show log' (or whatever), rather than it querying the database every so often and displaying the results. I'm working on a solution.
